Ilya Afanasyev (Birmingham/Oxford): The Invention of ‘Dynasty’ between Global Intellectual History and Political Economy
Abstract
Taking the surprisingly modern history of the word ‘dynasty’ as its starting point, this paper proceeds in two steps. First, it attempts to historicize ‘dynasty’. Scholars often take ‘dynasty’ for granted and treat it as a given reality (conceptual and institutional), associated with any monarchy across time and space, but especially in ancient and medieval history. But this standard view has its own under-studied history, which must be uncovered and criticized within the framework of global intellectual history. Second, this paper will ask whether problematizing and historicizing ‘dynasty’ may help us to reconceptualise the interplay between the history of concepts and political economy in the long period stretching from the late middle ages to the nineteenth century.
