Population Aging and International Health-Caregiver Migration to Japan. Cham: Springer International Publishing (SpringerBriefs in Population Studies), 103 p.

This book introduces Japan’s current policy initiatives directed at eldercare and international labor migration, and, wherever appropriate, it adds a comparative perspective from Germany. The book shows how eldercare is currently being organized and discusses integration policies for foreigners. It studies the policy-making process behind the system, and contextualizes the migration avenue within the strong roots of Japan’s eldercare in local communities and the non-preparedness of the nation to grant local citizenship to international newcomers. Through applying an approach of multi-level policy making, putting a strong focus on the local level and introducing new approaches, this book is of interest to policy makers and scholars in aging, migration, health care, and contemporary Japan.

Die Renaissance der Friedensbewegung in Okinawa. Innen- und außenpolitische Dimensionen 1995-2000. München: iudicium Verlag. 358 p.

[With: Heinrich, Steffen] Japan in der Ära Abe. Eine politikwissenschaftliche Analyse (Monographienreihe des Deutschen Instituts für Japanstudien, Band 60). München: iudicium Verlag. 291p

Destination Japan: Population Aging and International Labor Migration. Berlin: de Gruyter (Contemporary Japan. Journal of the German Institute for Japanese Studies Tokyo, Vol. 26, 2, special issue).

This special issue of Contemporary Japan focuses on how Japan copes with population aging and a shrinking workforce in an age of accelerated international migration flows. Questions that are being addressed include the following: What are the reasons behind the prevailing gap between the positioning of political, economic, and societal actors toward international migration to Japan? How does Japan's demographic change impact the nation's migration policy? To what extent does public opinion shape the political developments? How do the migrants themselves experience their life in Japan?

[With: Holdgrün, Phoebe] Modernisierungsprozesse in Japan (Miscellanea 18). Tokyo: Deutsches Institut für Japanstudien / Stiftung D.G.I.A.. 210p.

International Labor Migration to Japan: Current Models and Future Outlook. Hamburg: German Association for Asian Studies (ASIEN The German Journal on Contemporary Asia, no. 124, July 2012, special issue). pp. 8-197.

The eight research papers of this volume (plus a chapter-length introduction) explore the manifold political, sociological and economic issues surrounding international labor migration to Japan. Special attention is given to the debate on "wanted" and "unwanted" migration and integration, which has been led by politicians, bureaucrats, scholars, and representatives of the business world and civil-society organizations. The implications of this debate on migrants' life course decisions and professional success resp. failure is highlighted in case studies drawn from research on the recent health-care giver migration to Japan, and from research on Japan's largest ethnic minority, the Chinese. The volume closes by introducing a comparative perspective to the Japanese case, including Germany as a point of reference.

[With: Roberts, Glenda S.] Migration and Integration - Japan in Comparative Perspective. München: iudicium Verlag. 222 p.

Many nations today face the challenge of integrating immigrant populations into the national body. On one level, the work of integration requires a great deal of creative policy-making and policy adjustment, while at another level it requires citizens to re-think who belongs. In an age of declining population in the developed world, societal fears of foreign infiltration compete with economic demands for open markets and open borders. While politicians and policymakers grapple with these global realities at the meta level, citizens' groups often act at the community level providing needed on-the-ground support. Meanwhile, immigrants themselves conceive of strategies to manage their livelihoods, often in transnational spaces. This book introduces the frameworks and challenges of migration policy in Japan, Germany, France and Canada. It shares insights into ongoing processes of renegotiating the current structures on multiple levels of the policy-making process. Scholarly works are featured in this volume, as are voices from practitioners.

[With: Coulmas, Florian; Conrad, Harald; Schad-Seifert, Annette] The Demographic Challenge: A Handbook about Japan. Leiden, Boston: Brill. 1199 p.

This Handbook explores the challenges demographic change poses to today's Japan. The first part provides the fundamental data involved, and the subsequent two parts address the social and cultural aspects of Japan's demographic change. Parts four and five are dedicated to the political, economic and social security aspects of demographic change.
The Handbook brings together a group of international scholars of various disciplinary backgrounds to take issue with the world's fastest demographic transition. Topics include the dynamics of gender roles, images of age, policy formation, labour market structures, pension system, living arrangements, ethical values, and many more. Against the background of Japan's demographic change, the latest developments in these fields are being introduced, and whenever appropriate set into a context of historical and/or international comparison. This Handbook is the first comprehensive publication in English on Japan's demographic change.
